Saga Edition Revived Build Contest #5: Organizations
« on: August 09, 2025, 07:57:02 pm »
The Empire moves on the backs of its bureaucratic army, hundreds of divisions of labor in thousands of different organizations. Such is not unique to the Emperor's government; the New Republic, Yuuzhan Vong, and every other group in the galaxy are organized and staffed. For this build contest, we're going to one of the more obscure mechanics of swse: the creation of Organizations! From something as small as a planetary militia, to the mightiest of galactic superpowers, Organizations allow a Gamemaster to represent a faction's relationship with players in a series of charts and tables. While these Organizations might not be the flashiest parts of Saga Edition, they can prove to be invaluable tools for establishing a game's world and assisting a GM's preparations.

For any newcomers to these contests, how this works is you're given a contest theme (in this case it'll be that of "Organizations"), and participants in the contest can make any kind of build they want to try and match that theme (complying with the rules below, which largely amount to "keep to official swse rules"). Once all builds are submitted and the deadline is reached (21 days from the contest's posting, which for this contest would be August the 30th), then people get two votes to pick whatever build they like the most; after a week of voting (ending on the 6th of September), the build with the most votes, wins!

Unlike character creation, the rules for creating new Organizations are a bit more obscure. For those needing to familiarize themselves with the system, you can find the rules for Organizations here.

With all that out of the way, good luck to contest participants, and I look forward to seeing how creative the community can get with these contests!

As Organizations don't use the same creation rules as characters, most of the rules covering abilities and character traits aren't applicable. The rules have been adjusted accordingly:
  • Builds should comply with the Organization rules in regards to an Organization's traits and characteristics. If a particular mechanic is not adequately covered by these rules, you are encouraged to use your best judgement to maintain the spirit of Organizations' rules.
  • You are limited to 2 builds per contest. This keeps it a fair game.
  • Please stay on topic of the thread. If something needs to be discussed more in detail, please start another thread and move your thoughts there. This keeps the contest thread clean and simple.
  • You will have 21 days to submit builds, starting from this post. After the 21 days, 7 more days for voting will be available. Winners will be decided by a simple majority of the cast votes for the submitter that has the largest total number of votes. Only two votes per member is allowed (but one vote per build). You may not vote for yourself and no redos. All VOTES ARE FINAL!
  • Individuals can vote for the theme of the next build contest as part of the build voting. The same theme can be voted for by multiple people, and the next theme is chosen at random from the collected votes.
  • The most important rule: HAVE FUN!!! Think outside of the box, and let those awesome dreams we all have take shape!

Extension request accepted, on account of me getting really busy and not actually having the time to make anything myself.

5 - Master of the Order/Council; Help set policy for the order and oversee recruitment and training.  Can gain audience with equal rank members of other organizations.
6 - Grandmaster; head of the order.

Note:  Although the Jedi may appear to lead a simple life they have access to resources as per the Requisition system in GaW to supplement a small amount of personal equipment.  Requisitions can take the form of calling in Favors and such (as per "optional wealth by level guidelines")

Note:  Class names don't matter so I do NOT use them in criteria assignments.  Instead you see things that would be gained with those classes but Jedi can come from many backgrounds and thus may gain these things through various means.

I haven't assigned organization scores to ranks at this time.  May add more levels (as seen in the Rank and Privlege section in GaW) but the intent will be that a Jedi 1 can qualify for the Padawan level to account for starting lightsaber and that a character who has taken levels in Jedi Knight should qualify for the rank of Jedi.   A similar association with someone who could take levels in Master having that title available.

I'm a day late, but submissions are now closed and voting is open! Only 2 entries this time (Organizations are admittedly a bit daunting for someone to make for a contest), so I'm going to make a small tweak to the rules and say that everyone only gets one vote this time. Don't forget to vote for a theme for the next contest as well!

Process of elimination has me voting for StevenO's writeup of the Jedi :V I also am going to put out a more mainstream suggestion for next time with the theme AGENTS OF REBELLION.

I have to go with chelle's entry for being complete and well-thought-out. It feels similar to the official ones in the books.

For the next contest, I'll submit Combat Techs. These are builds which fit one of the (admittedly limited) flavors of sci-fi technicians, while also being a valuable person to have on your side in a combat scenario.

Going to close this one since it doesn't seem any more votes are coming in. Looks like a tie between my own build and StevenO's, and the randomizer has chosen "Combat Techs" as the next theme for these contests.
