Hi,
I discovered tabletop RPGs in the late 80's with the french version of Star Wars d6 by WEG. It never stopped, it is even a part time job now. After years of clumsy but highly enjoyable adventures, we switched to other themes and atmospheres, Stormbringer, Hawkmoon, Vampire, L5R and some famous french productions (at least in France). In 2007, SWSE brought me back to our galaxy far away and I arrived last weekend at the conclusion of our journey. 13 years. It was not that epic, the characters are not that powerful, sometimes we played only once a year, we are far from mastering all the subtleties and details of the system but, at least in my eyes, the magic is still there. I had the occasion to explore more serious topics, based on a wider universe, excited by all the fuss around the SW revival these last years. I could pour into the stories all the Legends stuff that mattered so much to me, Old Republic, Revan, the Hutts, the underground, politics, mysticism, while establishing connexions with the new canon and what was given to us by the series an the movies, whatever we may think of them. It may sound a bit formal and arrogant but our stories now had more layers and shades of grey.
I had never played any d20 game before and SWSE allowed to work on something that always frightened me: the rules, tactics, optimization, knowing your enemy and your own resources as a character backed by a serious ruleset. I suck at it. I had to be much more serious, disciplined, informed because the pleasure of this particular game relies heavily on a good understanding of the system. What is at stake, the thrill of the adventure, the dangers, the success, the preparation, gratifying the players that put effort into understanding and carefully choosing their Talents, Feats, equipment... SWSE requires some commitment and when your players accept that, as GM, I felt compelled to use everything I could to male it real and valuable.
And here you are. This community helped me so much to understand so many things, to deliver verified and robust info, to fine tune characters and help my players make the right choices. When something was blurry, I felt uncomfortable because the game and the way we tried to play it deserved to be crystal clear. Even if my questions were dumb or obvious, the amount of explanations, details and examples, the accessibility and generosity of your feedback definitely contributed to propose adventures I wouldn't have been able to tell on my own. When a player was able to use the right Feat combined with the right Talent in the right situation, it created a unique satisfaction that I owe you. Some final scenes were dramatically changed by some details I would never have thought of. For the better.
StevenO, Merc_1, masterArkaine, Sparx and many others I obvioulsy forget, thank you. This forum was a quiet place of study, informed debates and exhaustive answers in the troubled ocean of the internet. You were my "consultants", as I called you. It brought our game to a new level.
Last saturday, our Ace pilot, Crime lord, Jedi Knight, Soldier and Gunslinger were able to use all the clever tricks allowed by a decent understanding of the system and win the day. They ultimately vanished into the Unknown regions. They got an epilogue, some quotes of major NPCs remembering them in some kind of interview, years later.
This is over. I don't know if there will have any sequel, if I will use another system or edition. But it was a hell of a ride in my gaming history and you were part of it.
Thanks.
