Star Wars Saga Edition General / Re: Behavioral inhibitors in combat
« on: November 21, 2023, 12:52:00 am »
One thing I might add when it comes to interpreting a Behavioral Inhibitor is just the question of how you are handling DSS increases.  If the GM is handing out increases in a DSS for most anything then it better be darn near impossible for the droid to break the Inhibitor.

Huh, it didn´t occur to me, but now that you said it, it looks really obvious. After all, Inhibitors are sort of a "hard-wired moral code" of the droids. It might make a good lead on how to deal with it - anything rising DSS should be next to impossible under normal circumstances for a non-sentient droid (sentient droid should have same limitations as sentient organics, in my opinion, gaining DSS and probably quirks when violating the Inhibitors)

Basically, you´re right. Point is, by the rules there is not much the droid can´t do under certain circumstances and with good wording. It´s up to the player and GM what they allow and how they play the game. I was trying to show that there is not much stricktly forbidden. I once played a snapped medical droid that enjoyed inflicting pain upon organics. And I do believe it was all right, as the droid played was consistent. It always took delight in hurting organics, even while Treating the injuries. If I played a normal medical droid, trying to avoid any harm to sentients, and suddenly decided to shoot the thugs to speed things up, that would be wrong. (Side note - if such a help from the said droid would mean a difference between life and death of some other PC, I´d allow it, but give the droid some adequate quirk to represent the damage this caused to his logic)
I also see nothing wrong if a mining droid adds organics to his minig protocol (KotOR2 reference here) - if it is consistent.

Bottom line: Droid with heuristic processor has few real limitations, and Independent droid is the same as any organic sentient - RULEWISE. Thus, it really boils down to what the player wants, and what GM allows. And, of course, roleplay and having fun

What kind of processor will the droid have? If a basic one, I´d say it can´t do much. On the other hand, with heuristic processor, he can circumvent his inhibitors by "creatively interpreting its instructions" (SECR p. 190). Thus, if the droid can come up with plausible logical reason, he can do pretty much anything per rules. Of course, I´d suggest some test, maybe Int with DC set by the severity of the actions (I believe there was something like this in RCR, but I´m not sure)

Shooting anyone with stun is legal, as you put him out of harm´s way (he would be killed if he continues to attack your less-inhibited friends).
Shooting droid is legal (they´re not sentient and if they´re attacking sentients, destroying them is basically the same as destroying the blaster they´re pointing at someone).
Defending sentients against beasts is legal. Defending self or other droids is a bit trickier, but good reasoning could get you there (by protecting yourself you can later protect sentients), but that could call for the test
Shooting vehicles with ion cannons... that depends on circumstances and reasoning... shooting a swoop in a chase is no - the driver would die in a crash. But shooting at a TIE fighter is legit (with a test maybe) - there is definitely someone close to save the pilot, who will have several hours of life support, not to mention a chance to jury-rig the ship back online.
Shooting vehicles with lethal damage is questionable, but I would allow it with clever reasoning and Int test DC 15-20 or so.
StevenO - the argument with BBEG is not valid. BBEG is a living being, and droid character (unlike his player) doesn´t know he can´t kill him with a shot - he doesn´t know anything about HP and treshold, only that he could drill a hole in his chest or head with blaster. On the other hand, the droid can very well be avare that even with a lucky hit, he is unlikely to destroy a corvette with a signle shot from starfighter-class blasters, even with a lucky hit

Note on the side - the inhibitors are removed with a single level of Independent droid, which can be as soon as 4th lvl

Deflect comes into effect when you´re hit, thus before rolling the damage, so I assume it should come before the shield. Now if we would consider Negate energy Force power, I´d give that one after the shield, as you need to negate only what gets through

The Senate / Re: Fear Force Power Question
« on: June 02, 2023, 02:22:57 am »
Technically they should still be able to act if they given an action via a Talent like Impel Ally.  Also technically this would prevent the second power used with Linked Power from being activated, which means they would lose that use of the power until recovered.

Since these talents got mentioned, I´d like to ask how it works with all three of the action-giving talents? (Trust, Fortune´s favor, Impel Ally)
Fear states that the target can take only one Standard (or less, but for simplicity´s sake, let´s stick with the basic effect for the examples) on its next turn.
Impel Ally should be available, since you take the granted action immediately, not on your turn.
Fortune´s favor gives you a standard action you have to take before the end of your turn. With a critical hit on AoO, you can take the extra Standard action before you start your turn. If you wait for your turn or get that crit during your Standard action, however, the extra Standard action is wasted. You get an extra Standard action, but you can take only one during the turn.
Same goes for Trust: You get an extra Standard action, but only on your turn, and since you´re allowed to take only one Standard aciton by the effect of Fear, the extra one is wasted.

Do I read that correctly? Or do the extra actions go on top of what Fear allows you no matter what? Or does it depend on the order of receiving the effects (Fear reduces you to one Standard, then Trust gives you another, so you have two VS Trust gives you extra Standard action, then Fear reduces you to single SA, so you have only one)?

Also I’m surprised that the Noble talent:

Connections

You are able to obtain Licensed, Restricted, Military, or Illegal equipment without having to pay a licensing fee or endure a background check, provided the total cost of the desired Equipment is equal to or less than your Character Level x 1,000 credits.

In addition, when obtaining Equipment or Services through the Black Market, you reduce the black market cost multiplier by 1.

Not saying it would highly recommended but not needing to worry about licensing for all the various weapons and equipment for a Starship seemed like a good deal.

With this talent, I always had trouble figuring what the Total cost means. Total cost for transaction? Total cost per day? Total cost between two level-ups? Total cost since taking it? I´ve seen it ruled any of these ways...

Shev looks over the frantic action. It seems there´s not much he could do to help here.
Guess I´ll go greet the imps. he thinks to himself, and starts for the street they should be aprroaching from. He doesn´t bother to look for Bor, and instead calls him via comlink. Shev assumes he has it ready.
"You did manage to destroy the computer core, right, Bor?"
As he walks, he grabs one of the guards. "Get half the guards and come with me. We´re going to slow the imps down." He doesn´t bother waiting for the answer, and moves on. The last bike catches the mandalorian´s eye.
"Leave me the bike for evac."
And with that, he quickly finds a good, hidden position outside, switches his rifle for autofire, and waits for approaching enemies.

Shev looks to Sin from his post at third floor. He swears under his breath and asks her: "How many? Where from? And can we get out of town?" Then he bangs the butt of his rifle on the railing a few times. "Everybody, get up! Pack the things and get ready! We´ve got company coming in!"

Oh, OK, then a standard sentry. I imagined it as a rooftop lookout, or something simillar. Level 3 circuit sounds fine.

After spending a bit of time drinking, Shev will return and go to sleep. He´ll use a free bunk in the camp, and after some sleep, he´ll take over a watch duty from Sin, so she can get some sleep too.
Shev won´t take a bike out, and he does suggest the other one should be loaded now - it´s better to be ready sooner than later.

Shev will go out to drink early in the evening, but only for a few beers*, and asks if anyone wants to join. He doesn´t go to any club, though, but asks some of the workers to recommend some cantina close by.

Shev will try to find out what we know about he missing transport - why is it late, if it has some trouble and requires assistance, or whether we shoule expect some trouble coming with it. He´ll first direct these questions to Eri, as she is in charge and knows the crew. If she doesn´t take the hint and try to get the answers, he´ll take it upon himself, but he´ll be annoyed as he was hired to shoot other things than questions.

Other than that, he´ll take care of local security, complementig Sin and taking over watch duty, when she rests.

A question or three, tsuyoshikentsu (maybe a bit ugly or under-the-belt): How many times have you seen someone layer armor, player or GM? How many times have you seen it at least attmpted? And how many times have you personaly used it (as GM or PC)? (I mean of course outside the explicitly allowed combinations like thinsuit, gauntlets etc.)
I just want to understand why you defend it so much

...
This would also, by the way, give rise to ridiculous situations such as no twi'lek without the Ryloth background being allowed to be from Ryloth.

Origin Backgrounds explicitly states that it represents an unusual birthplace, and you cannot select the same planet of origin as your species traditional homeworld (RECG p.20). So the ridiculous situation here would be the opposite- if your twi´lek doesn´t have Origin Background, then he is from Ryloth, period. You have no choice in that matter.

I know I already wrote that there is nothing in RAW preventing it, but I think you should take into account one thing:
Quote
SECR p. 241
Adjudicating the Rules
When everyone gathers around the table to play the game, the Gamemaster is in charge... ...Good players always recognize that you have the ultimate authority over the game mechanics. Good GMs know not to change or overturn an existing rule without a good, logical justification so the players don´t grow dissastisfied...

This can easily be read as "houserules are per RAW" :D

Now, joking aside, that means that what GM says goes, if he has a logical reason, and good player should accept it, unless he has a good reason to argue (well the part about arguing is not written there so per RAW a good player should never challenge GM about his rules :D (sorry, another joke)). To apply it to our situation - I do see there logical reasons not to layer armor, and I don´t see "not explicitly written in rulebook" as good enough reason to allow it. From the five people that actually cared to comment it, four people were against layering (StevenO, MERC, lil-literalist, and me), and only one (you, tsuyoshikentsu) was for it. IMPORTANT NOTE: if anyone feels like I misinterpreted their opinion, or I should not use it at all, just tell me, and I´ll modify this post accordingly

Bottom line: Yes, you´re right that there is nothing in RAW preventing ou from layering armor, but 80% GMs will rule against it as soon as you bring it up.
