Got an admiration for Yoda? Want to be just as badass, but more, shall we say, "gamey", like if Yoda is beef, you want to be venison. I'm going to talk about combos that are especially useful for small-characters, so
So, what you'll to do is look at your strengths. First of all, there are only a few small-sized characters to choose from. Most of them have a +2 bonus to dexterity, and ALL small sized characters get a +1 bonus to reflex.
So, that's essentially a +2 bonus to Reflex. Now, that and the dexterity bonus are you only real advantages you have over your medium sized compatriots. Which means, I advocate for your small-sized character to take Lightsaber Defense instead of Block and Deflect and Redirect Shot, like the classic Jedi would.
Now, you're probably going to have a decent dex, but likely sub-par strength. In fact, if you're smart, you'll have a 6 in strength because lets face it, a small-sized character really should make strength it's "dump stat". That said, you don't have to. I simply recommend assigning a 14 or 15 to dex, and letting that grow to a 16 or 17 with your species mod, or leave it at 14 or 15 if you don't have one, like Snivvians (which are my favorite small Jedi) because you're goal as an alternative defense method to Block and Deflect is going to have to be the game's default method, which is defense. So try to boost that. Grab armored Defense and improved armored defense if you can, a Jedi 3/Soldier 3 could have AD and IAD and 2 lightsaber defenses. Another lightsaber defense could come in handy so consider entering a prestige class a level late to grab it.
You can't get Ataru until 8th level, so dual-wielding is a great way to make up some damage. Granted, it's a full-round action, but, you'll probably have the dex for the feats. Also, the Shoto Focus talent has NO drawback to a small sized character, since you're wielding two shotos, you pretty much get the +2 bonus to attacks all the time.
Now, when you get to 8th level, I would recommend taking Makashi and then Ataru if you are a single-weapon wielder, or Niman and then Jar'Kai if you grabbed Shoto Focus. If you grabbed Shoto Focus, grab Shoto Master after you get
At level 10, you're reflex will be about 33 with a Dex of 16 and a +6 armor bonus halved, with Makashi active. It will be 2 points higher if you took Niman and Jar'Kai, however what you need to ask yourself, is if you're better off dealing more damage in a single attack, or if you better off dealing more damage after you've moved in and your target, and will be starting your turn next to them. In which case, dual-wielding won't always be better. Your 2d6 average damage is 7. You'r probably getting a -1 from strength, so it's probably an average of 6. And another attack for an average of 12, if both hit. Now, say you have a 16 in strength, and you took Ataru. Your average of 7 will increase to 13 if you wield it two-handed, however, be warned, if you wield your weapon two-handed, you can't use Makashi. Because of that, and it seems to me that you will get a higher bonuses to both attack and defense, and only a minimal hit to damage, plus the option to activate Lightsaber Defense as a free-action with a talent selection, makes the choice all the much easier for me to go dual-wielding over single-wielding. Of course, if you are going to be a force focused Jedi, don't take dual-weapon mastery, and don't take Shoto Focus. Just take Lightsaber Defense, Niman/Jar'Kai, and Shoto Master. And, if your Cha and UtF is high enough, don't even worry about Lightsaber Defense, and grab Block, Deflect, and then get Masterwork Lightsaber and Lightsaber specialist, and wield a guard shoto and a regular shoto to get a +6 bonus to Block and Deflect.
Now, you're going to have a pitiful carrying capacity, especially so if strength is your dump stat. I mean, you might not be able to wear armor at all. A combat jump-suit might be the only thing you can wear, in which case, I advocate against it. two-talent investment for a +2 bonus to ref defense is unsound. 2 talents dedicated to defense will on average yield a higher bonus to defense.
Now, if you're playing in a rather lax game, and you already ignore tradition requirements, this could be a prime time to argue your case to take the Imperial Knight class's Armor Mastery. One talent for a likely +3/+4 bonus to Ref is definitely broken, but one talent for a +2 bonus to Reflex? I don't think so, but that's for your GM to decide.
