Title: Re: The hyperspace tangle
Post by: MERC_1 on January 15, 2023, 08:46:48 am
You could have this obstacle that means that most ships may need to travel through real space for a couple of days to pass it. There may be dangers, pirates and other factions that are there making it even tougher.

Take inspiration from star trek where they often encounter a problem like a nebulosa or other unknow obstacle that takes them out of warp. Just translate it to Star Wars language.

That was my thought based almost exclusively on what I read.  In your game you can really do what you like and when you start dealing with hyperspace travel you're often getting into areas that "the rules" that cover characters matters less and less. In many ways I might equate the tangle to a mountain range or ocean here on Earth where you could have well known travel routes and stuff on one side but then after making a long/difficult trip across the obstacle you find yourself in unknown lands without any idea how to travel in there.

While I'm not entire sure how I'd run it that sounds like it could be an interesting adventure idea with the tangle and travel in the unknown making things more complex.  While I haven't put it to paper I've often considered some big race between "independent cargo haulers" that involved hyperspace travel between various points but without a set order; it doesn't work so well with SWSE's "every trip takes this same random time" idea but I was thinking more of it working when the trip from A to B has a pretty standard time so characters would need to figure out the most efficient order while hoping complications don't slow them too much.

Thank you very much once again, StevenO. What you're saying is just what I was hoping to hear. If it's like a thin(nish) barrier like that you desciribed, then it both prevents easy access to (and from) the western Unknown Regions, and doesn't impede movement that stays inside that region.

I'm writing an adventure, the premise of which is loosely based on the novel "Around the World in 80 Days" (and also a bit from the French comic book "Asterix and Cleopatra"). There's a bet, and there will be a race between two parties to see who can blaze a route to an inhabited world in the Unknown Regions, with sentient inhabitants, and come back faster. Now I'm not sure how commercially viable that kind of route might be in the future, as it has to go through the tangle, thus being potentially dangerous... but with an excellent astrogator and a tempting market in the destination world, it just might be. Anyway, the plot is more about personal honor and proving a point than the actual usefulness of the resulting route.

I believe it's supposed to be something like a curtain that cut off the western half of the galaxy.  It has a variable thickness (thus that variable additional jump time) and for all I know it could fluctuate for some reason.  With the information I see once to get thru the barrier hyperspace travel would work within the unknown region much like it does in the rest of the galaxy except that hyperspace information will be very hard to come by.  The Chiss and others in the region may have route maps but they don't share easily.

Now I'm not sure what you're thinking but tangle should only come into effect when entering or leaving the UR.  Now for all I know there could potentially be some "holes" in it that are probably guarded or mostly unknown but those would be the exceptions.

The Unknown Regions are separated from the rest of the galaxy by this hyperspace tangle (see UR page 7, also Star Wars the Essential Atlas page 33). Now, how big is this barrier, and what kind of area does it cover? Does it permeate through the whole of the Unknown Regions? And if it does, how can the Chiss and other UR civilizations use hyperspace travel there at all? Or is it more like a thin wall? Does it align mainly to the north-south axis?

What are your views on this tangle? I quite like it, but I really need to understand its shape and size to use it in adventures.
