Perhaps but I suspect the DnD Tools provided that service.

I'm not all that familiar with 4e having just purchased the starter kit (three core books) and deciding 4e isn't for me but I believe WotC really tried to integrate their own software into 4e to such an extent that you almost NEEDED to use their system to build characters.

I have no clue about D&D 4e. I looked at it briefly and decided it wasn't for me. StevenO is the resident D&D expert around here. Otherwise I suggest you post at the Wizards Community, perhaps the D&D 4e General board.

To be bluntly honest I'm not entirely sure what I mean.  I only dipped my toe into 4e because there were a number of things I didn't like about it.  I saw hoping for something more like SAGA but that's not how I see it.

I seem to remember them pushing some kind of online experience with 4e and that is probably why am I thinking they had online tools for character building.  While I also can't speak directly about Richter's Character sheet (I build characters without additional assistance) if you want to know about a digital character builder the best place to take this question would be the WotC forums.  You will be far more likely to find someone who can answer your 4e questions quickly over there.

During the 5e playtest there was much worrying on the WotC boards about whether the 4e character builder would still be available to those who didn't make the switch, because it was virtually impossible to make a character without it.

so what is your favorite edition of dnd?

i found this  http://archive.wizards.com/DnD/Tools.aspx but it's not for free you gotta pay 6$ per month. I'll maybe try it for a month.

I like 3.5 but recognize that it has some pretty harsh balance issues especially when magic is concerned.  I haven't really looked at 5e yet but I hear good things about it and if I had to get into a newer edition of DnD I'm not adverse to trying it.

Well, it's not quite the same as the Excel sheet, but Pathfinder's SRD is a good place to start checking out the system:

I really wish there was something comparable for 4E, but Wizards intentionally kept the 4E rules out of a full SRD.

As far as Pathfinder goes, you can also look to http://www.d20pfsrd.com/ . There are files similar to the excel for PF. I'll see if I can dig up the ones I have. Honestly, PF has balance issues as well. Much like 3.5 did back in the day, it's becoming bloated with loads of books. Though like Saga, you don't need to use all of them. It's a great system. Haven't played in some time, but before Saga, and before that group imploded, we played PF allot.

Actually, here's a link to the excel sheet. Bes tone I've found. A bit slow, but I'm fairly certain it has everything. You don't need it, certainly, but I like them for day where I don't feel like doing all the math. There is also a fillable/savable pdf chartacter sheet you can find on the net. Great for those of use with less than stellar hand writing. http://sourceforge.net/projects/scoreforge/

perhaps PF should be it's own thread? I don't want to clutter D&D threads....

Edit: I really wish we could have an SRD for Saga. I know why there can't be one, but it would be nice.

Pathfinder and DnD 3.5 are similar enough that there probably isn't a burning need to separate the two.

It certainly would be nice to have some open source SAGA even if all of the "Star Wars" stuff was taken out and/or made generic.  It should be obvious why we can have "StarWars" be open sourced but there are so many SAGA mechanics that are great it's a shame not to use them.  I really would have liked WotC to revamp d20 Modern/Future into a SAGA Edition.
