While some encounters are pretty easy to be open ended I sometimes think it is a bigger challenge to build one for X players of Y level and include Z if at all possible in it.

I am White/Blue.
I am both lawful and rational. I'm extremely orderly, and rely on complex rules and laws, upholding them whenever I can.
At best, I am organized and law-abiding. At worst, I am bureaucratic and totalitarian.

I actually like a few restrictions.

People think that no boundaries fosters more creativity than having restrictions.  I feel differently.  Anybody can be creative with no boundaries.  It's when you put in some obstacles to overcome that the true creative and lateral thinkers get to shine.

I also feel that when there are restrictions/requirements you can get a much better sense on how to judge something.  The YBTC contests are so open ended that you can have a very basic low level character trying to compete with a min/maxed (potentially even munchkined) 20th-level character; sure there may be voting which takes on voter bias but you really couldn't compare the two characters.

There are merit to both points of view. But once again StevenO hit the nail with a part of his statement. You should not compare hi and low level challenges.

If you are looking for an encounter, making a competition for a CL 12-15 encounter with imperial forces on the ice planet of Hoth chose frs enough of a structure. If you add that the imperials are using walkers you may make it too restricted. On the other hand there are plenty of walkers to choose from.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, ideas and excellent points. I think I'll try my hand at one "Build the Specific thing"  competition and we'll take it from there.

Build the Encounter is also a great idea, but one I do not yet feel comfortable taking on.

I've talked a little to Master Arkaine about the format and will probably do so again before posting the competition, to get an extra set of eyes on it before going live.
