Star Wars: Patrol
« on: May 24, 2018, 02:31:23 pm »
In addition to noticing that PbP has kinda died out here, I've also been looking at another RPG:

Patrol

PATROL is not a game about universe-shattering heroes.  It’s about a bunch of regular guys and gals who get the short end of the stick in combat and the real world.  The drama of being sent on nigh-impossible S&D missions while being under-equipped and underappreciated combine together with time and pressure to push people to the breaking point.

I have converted some of my regular PbP houserules for Saga to cover some of the lethality found in Patrol.  I've examined things like the Madness of Knowledge (JATM page 42), Clone Madness (FUGC page 178), and Droid Quirks (SGtD page 20) for ideas on paranoia and insanity.  I would really be interested in trying this out with a group.  I will post what I have in the way of houserules so far, with the certainty that there will be extra things added or modified as I grow closer to figuring out how to strike the right balance.

Post if you are interested, and comments for how things might be simulated are also welcome.

Houserules
--Any era appropriate species is acceptable (although I haven’t decided on an era yet and I want your feedback).  If you have questions about this, let me know.
--The only class available is Nonheroic.
--The only class available is Nonheroic.
--Part of the drama that unfolds around PATROL is the fact the heroes are undertrained and underqualified.  As such, you may not multi-class.
--Point buy of 15 points
--Make your character 3rd level.
--No Destiny points.
--No Force points
--No Force-sensitive characters or Force-related feats.
--No Skill Focus
--For credits/possessions, you are granted a basic suit of light armor, a blaster rifle, a blaster pistol, a utility belt, a survival kit, and a bandolier with 6 power packs, 2 power cells, and 4 frag grenades.  You receive no other credits to buy materials, but you may be granted other equipment based on skills or rolls.  One example may be that someone with the Use Computer skill is a communications specialist and need a computer or other communication booster.
--Please include a description of your character, both physically and personality.
--Pick one of the following alignments:  Idealistic, Pragmatic, Righteous, or Egocentric.
--I was thinking about placing the heroes in either the Clone Wars as Republic militia or the Rebellion Era as Imperial Army troopers, but I'm open to suggestions
--Patrol is a wargame, but it is also full of drama.  There will be some fights, but I’m also going to try to work the system in a way that will encourage you to work together, but may also convince you to do things you think your character wouldn’t.  This same system will also drive the NPCs that you are working with or come across.  Concepts such as  ‘Might makes right’, ‘no man left behind’, and ‘war is hell’ drive games of Patrol, so gray morality and alignment sliding can affect everyone in different ways.
