I want to hear your idead for a new game
« on: August 19, 2014, 02:11:21 pm »
I've been playing here a lot of PbP for the last year and I was thinking of GMing one for once. This game would probably start halfway through September when I'll have some more free time to dedicate to it, but right now I want to see what would everyone like to play as I don't have one solid idea or concept.

I would like anyone to give their opinions, even if they don't end up playing the actual game, so:

Would you like a long campaing or a one-shot?
What kind of game would you like? Action-packed? Intrigue? Adventure? etc
In what era would you like this game to be set in?
What kind of people comprises the group? What is their goal? How many players are there?
At what level would you like to play?

These are just some very vague questions, but feel free to include any details you would like this thing to have.

I'm not promising to take everything into consideration, but I think it could be cool to discuss the game concept with all of you instead of just deliverying a closed idea. Of course things will also change when we are closer to the beginning of the game and we know who is playing and their characters.

Awesome!  We'd love to see another PbP GM around.  As for idea or concept, you could always start with an era that you really like and then build the campaign around what your players suggest.

Would you like a long campaing or a one-shot?

As an experienced PbP GM, my suggestion for you is to do a one-shot and get a feel for being a PbP GM.  People are better able to devote a few months (or a little more, like a year  :) ) than a possible full length campaign (those that remember my Masque of War PbP, we were going for about 2 years and only got through 1 and 1/2 adventures).

What kind of game would you like? Action-packed? Intrigue? Adventure? etc

I like an even blend of adventure material.

In what era would you like this game to be set in?

I don't have an era preference (I know, lots of help  ;) ).  To me, era doesn't matter as much as the type of game.

What kind of people comprises the group? What is their goal? How many players are there?
At what level would you like to play?

These questions more depend on campaign concepts.  For example, a military campaign will probably compose mostly of soldier-types (attitude/concept, not class).  On the other hand, a cruise liner that crashes on a desolate/uninhabited-except-for-the-beasts-of-doom-and-destruction planet can accommodate any character type (doesn't matter who you are, your next goal is basic survival).

I think 4-5 players is a good group size.

I'm more of a low-powered guy, so for level, I prefer 3-8, although I'm not opposed to higher level.

These are just some very vague questions, but feel free to include any details you would like this thing to have.

Are you using Destiny Points?  The Rebellion Era background mechanic?  Standard method for Force Points, or the FP per day option from JATM?  How will Hp be handled (should we roll, will you just give max Hp per hit die, etc)?  Other houserules you might want us to be aware of?

PS:  You are always welcome to use my list of houserules (just look at Loose Ends or Outlaws of the Expanse).

Always a wise GM that seeks input from his players.  Just remember with PbP, it's always best to have a definite goal for the players to work towards so there is progress.  Side quests on tabletop take one evening, side quests in PbP take weeks (and more likely months).

Hrmmm, well Sienn did a good job of answering everything.

I was also think about finally getting my PbP off the ground, but I dont know what my September looks like yet to see about it. Plus, there isnt really enough active players to have two running, so I'll continue to wait on re-starting my PbP efforts. The floor is yours.

While I am a brand new member to the forum I am interested in playing in a PbP game.  However, I admittedly have 0 experience with PbP.

Anyway to answer the questions originally posted:

As I have no PbP experience, other than lurking and reading various games, I really have no preference for most of the questions.

I would prefer lower levels and a mix of action/intrigue.

Goodluck getting your game(s) up and running deadpool and MasterArkaine

The main thing to keep in mind with PbP is that the adventure will progress more slowly, and you'll be able to give more detailed responses because you have time to think about what your character would say.

haha, loved CHIA's answer.

Ok, I will try to mature some ideas I have. I still have time. Hope I can actually do it though.
Thanks for the feedback.

Would you like a long campaign or a one-shot?

I think this comes down to the group. I have been running Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Star Trek campaigns on my website since 2003. It is mostly the same players and characters in each genre, although we may move from genre to genre as my head goes through the GM creative process (meaning sometimes I get tired of thinking in scifi and I go to swords and sorcery). But, we return to our stories - I do not let them die out.

To advise on what route you should take, start with one episode and play it out. If everyone had fun and wants to move on to the next story with the same characters, go for it. You will soon find you have a string of small stories that tie themselves together in one long campaign.

What kind of game would you like? Action-packed? Intrigue? Adventure? etc

Ask your players what they want to play. If you have a group that want to shoot'em up, but you're running a political intrigue story, it will fizzle. So write the back story of the type of game you want to run, announce the game type and see who is interested.

In what era would you like this game to be set in?

Me personally, I like the Clone Wars / Rise of the Empire. It's a timeframe that allows for jedi and the attempt to hold on to a way of life (the Republic) but then goes into a gritty oppressive atmosphere (Empire).

What kind of people comprises the group? What is their goal? How many players are there?

I try to work with no more than five to six players in a game, although I ran a Star Trek campaign for many years with just two. More than six is too hard, in my opinion, to keep everyone interested with activities and story arcs.

At what level would you like to play?

I would start any game at levels 3-6. These levels give the PC's enough to work with to make it fun. I personally would never want to run a high level game - to me it is just too hard to create the challenges necessary to keep players working.

My two 1/100th's...  ;)

As I never gave a direct answers, here goes. My opinions might be a tad judgmental of previous experience, but I mean no offence to the other PbP GMs

1) Either way is cool. One shot are much faster. If you want to do a longer campaign style, two things I will want to see happen: Leveling up and pace of GM response be reasonably fast. After four PbPs here, these two thing bug me the most. #1 is Lack of even a mention of XP awards and/or leveling up. It not a huge thing, but would be nice to actually advance. As for as pace of response, PbPs here then to end early because of one thing: Either the GM or the players are very slow to respond. Of course we all have real life to handle. Some have more to do then other. To me, if you commit to a game, you should be setting aside some set time to handle your part in the game. If things come up, please try to let people know as fast as you can.

2) Action. Every PbP I've done here has been overblown with talk. Even now, I run my characters with more and more talk as almost a nervous tick (aka bored). Enough diplomacy and political nonsense already, this site needs a more action packed game!

3) Legacy era has been used quite a lot here, might be time for a Clone Wars or Rebellion era campaign. I plan on non-Jedi characters from now on anyway

4) 4-6 is the sweet spot.

5) If you go with a long campaign format, I'm cool with starting at a lower level. I like start at level 7-10 personally because you can do much more with a character, but building up one is fun as well. If you do a one shot level 8-12 is a great middle ground. 12-16 is be even more fun if you can come up with a unstoppable main villain. Sienn's one shot was a great example
