Infinity Campaign Guide
« on: April 17, 2019, 01:16:09 pm »
I've been working on this for a couple months now, so I felt that I should share an early Alpha build. This is by no means meant to be a final draft, or even a rough draft, merely a quick show of what I have going on so far.

Current build (0.30):
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qFE4Y9Gzz_jTPdVSfZ4pV62HrKnlcPKO/view?usp=sharing

This is based on the fanfiction A Single Decision: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11714223/1/A-Single-Decision-Take-Two

Started through it.  One thing in the "infinities" event has me wondering just how long the war would actually continue with the primary driving force behind both sides (Palpatine) being dead.  It certainly wouldn't be the "glorious victory for the Republic" that we may see in the movies but I certainly could see some kind of peace coming from it with both sides backing down.  Grievous may be a General but I don't see him as a fool and could see him arguing for peace even if/as he plans any moves he may need.

On the species the Stenax are bothering me a bit even though back in the WEG days I created a character that meets a lot of the description although my though at the time was more around the Gargoyles show but without all the magic.  The stat modifiers for them probably should be reworked because even as a physical species they should have some balancing factors.  I'll also remind you that a large size should also bring with it a size boost to Damage Threshold which can negate a reason for the CON bonus.  I might also give them a +1 natural armor bonus to offset the size penalty.  Maybe they don't use flight for "spiritual" reason but if it is something they can do then that speed should be listed and at the very least if they could fly I'd expect them to use that ability if they were to fall to negate falling damage.

Getting to the Viraanntesse I'd say the same thing about stats, CON, and Damage threshold that I mentioned above.  The stability bonus for being multi-legged should be +5 to better fit in with how SWSE does modifiers; these multi-legs may also increase its carrying capacity above that of a bipedal creature.

Guess I'm not a big fan of Slugthrower training.  Redirect already fails against Slugthrowers but while I could see something that makes Deflect harder (I should look to see what's already out there) I really don't feel this feat should just negate Deflect entirely.  I also wonder if your feats with Conditioning as a prereq wouldn't be better/easier/make more sense if they used Shake It Off as a prereq instead; this is especially true with the Unflinching Resolve.

Not sure what to make of your Nonheroic Heroes sidebar.  To me the nono-heroic class should only be used for non-PCs.  Now when an NPC is interacting with a PC I'd expect the levels of NH to be appropriate.  In many ways I also see NPCs as interchangeable so you can basically do whatever you want with one independent of what the PCs do.  Now if you wanted to "level" an NPC to keep pace with the PCs I'd NEVER give it +3NH for each +1 heroic level the PCs get; the whole reason to use NH levels is to get the skill and BAB levels up toward PC levels without giving them all the other power to match so boosting HN at such a fast race now has them racing ahead of the PCs while it still doesn't really boost durability all that much.  As for "retraining" this is an idea I can very much support.  In fact, I even have an old thread showing who I could "level" a Force Secret wielding Sith Lord from CL 7 all the way to CL 14 without actually changing the number of levels the character has.  To me this is simply about replacing levels of NH with "heroic levels which CAN include PrCs" to slowly increase the effective CL to go along with the heroes; the "build" should be legal every step of the way and I generally do NOT want the character losing hard stats along the way but sometime an ability or number could morph into something else providing the same benefit but opening up what originally provided the benefit.

That's what I have for now.

Thanks for the feedback! I will try and address each of your concerns one at a time.

Firstly concerning the storyline, while Palpatine, Dooku, and Anakin are all dead, there are many in the Republic that still push for war. In one of the early chapters of the fanfiction, Tarkin ends up replacing the Senator of Eridu and becomes the new head of the pro-war faction. Grievous finds that an implant given to him by Dooku had been increasing his aggression and limiting his rational thought. He has this removed, but he doesn't turn into a peace-loving hippie, he still wants to win the war.

There's a whole lot more to it than that, but if you want specifics I recommend reading the fanfic.

Next is your concerns about species. I had completely forgotten about the size adjustments to Damage Threshold, so thanks for pointing that out. I removed the Con bonus to Stenax and lowered the Viraanntesse's bonus to +2. I am a bit iffy about the suggested Natural Armor bonus, as I already gave the Stenax 3 different species traits. I am slightly confused by your critique about their flight speed

Maybe they don't use flight for "spiritual" reason but if it is something they can do then that speed should be listed

I have listed their fly speed as 8 squares, and mentioned their unwillingness to fly, could you be a little more specific? I also changed the Viraanntesse's stability bonus to +5, although I couldn't find any mention of an increased carrying capacity in the rules.

Slugthrower Training was included as early in the story a group of militiamen were shown to use slugthrower to shot "though" a lightsaber's blade (which only made the bullet super-heated). Both Hardened Resolve and Unflinching Resolve have had their Conditioning prerequisite changed to Shake It Off.

Finally, the Nonheroic Heroes sidebar is meant to represent b-list heroes that are important because the a-list heroes failed (thus creating the Infinity). I used 3 NH levels per H level as CL are calculated with the same method, though I have lowered the number to 2 NH after giving it another look.

Thanks again for the feedback! I will upload the revised version (build 0.02) as soon as I post this.

I'll admit it's possible I missed the fly speed the first time around.  Maybe I was thinking it should be somewhere else and thus overlook where it is to not see it where it actually is; sort of like if you always put your mobile communications device down in one spot but one time go to pick it up but it's not there so you really worry although it is really just sitting about 3 feet away on the same surface.  As for the number of "species traits" I often wouldn't worry about it too much unless they all happen to stack together; for the Stenax I might even go with -4 CHA and would change their Intimidation related trait to work off STR instead of CHA instead of just having it be a reroll.

I am reading through that "source material" and finding it very entertaining.  As for that early part about a slugthrower shot "going through" a lightsaber that is easy enough to explain as a failed Deflect roll without needing to resort to anything special.

I don't view characters as A-list heroes, B-list heroes, or anything like that.  To me you have PCs and NPCs although within the ranks of NPCs you do get a huge range of power variation as some may be full heroic in their own right and some will be purely non-heroic in build.  When I look at a "character" and how it interacts with the PCs I often look at its skill modifier and perhaps BAB which may determine how its LEVEL compares to the PCs; now its ROLE with the PCs then may determine what I want to give it for a CL which in turn dictates the balance of HN to heroic/PrC levels that character may have.

In case you were wondering http://thesagacontinues.createaforum.com/the-senate-8/sith-lord-from-cl-7-to-cl-14-a-guide should be the link to that post where I take a 14th-level Force Secret using Sith Lord from a "humble" CL 7 suitable for use against lower level PC and how I'd boost it to it's full CL 14 potential without changing its actual level and ideally never really losing anything along the way.

I may not know who many of the players are in the story or even if they are "actual" characters is official Star Wars Canon but I'm enjoying the story.  I've made it to Chapter 14.

I like it.  Did you need stats for Jedi Leia for ESB Infinities and Anakin for RotJ Infinities?  I've got some.

I wasn't planning on going in-depth into other Infinities in this campaign guide, just give a chapter on making your own setting. You can post them if you like, I kind of like the sound of "Grand Master Leia"
