STAR WARS
FORBIDDEN PATHS

The Cold War continues. Ten years have passed since the Treaty of Coruscant and unrest is beginning to brew. The Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire continue their technological and military race against each other, looking for any edge to exploit against each other.

During this period many fields of technology advance rapidly, one of them being astrogation. A discovery has been made beyond Republic territory in wild space concerning a dangerous astral phenomenon, the Rurlat Nebula. A natural pathway has formed through the toxic kuular radiation field that leads to the Neron system.

It is the first time in 138 years that Neron has not been cut off from the rest of the galaxy.

The Republic, eager for new territory and material to use against the Empire, has set its eyes on the contents. Plans have been made to colonize the territory. The Galactic Survey Corp and the Jedi Service Corp, along with several corporate backers and volunteer explorers, have been dispatched to accomplish this mission.

It is titled the Janzoon II Expeditionary Fleet.

Now, docked at Koda Station in the Outer Rim, the fleet makes final preparations before casting off to begin its mission for the Republic...

Koda station, Outer Rim

1731 hours

***

Hustle and bustle. For the first time in ages, THAT was the term that best described Koda station. Normally this place wasn't even 1/10th as busy as it was now, or as crowded. Every race, gender and species flooded the corridors, each one buying selling or transporting a level of good rarely seen in a backwater system like this. They all moved about on urgent business, stumbling over one another as they went about very important business. Whether it was gathering more air canisters, selling goods and food, or secreting the most recent issue of 'Tales of Tails' (a questionable flimsiplast magazine, featuring females of several species dressed in either little or nothing at all) into cargo headed for the Janzoon II, everyone had a task they were rushing to complete before evening. Regular of the station -bored farming youths or smugglers- would say they'd been invaded! Ever since the announcement that Koda Station would be the final point of departure for an expedition into wild space territory, a veritable flood of new faces had boarded and set up shop. Kiosks that had been empty for months, even years, were leased within weeks and living quarters that had been void long enough to gather dust were renovated with shocking turnaround. The Republic, with its plush, upper class citizens, demanded superior accommodations; money now lined the bulkheads. Diplomats, scientists, entertainers, and soldiers -those that did the real moving and shaking of the galaxy- had snatched up contracts and leases, setting up offices, laboratories and barracks faster than seemed possible. The locals couldn't believe their eyes, even ones that already lived on the station.

Yet, there it was: the biggest influx of business any of them had seen in their lives. All thanks to the Republic's hunger for new territory.

The fresh infusion of credits into the region and the attention that accompanied it was wonderful. But the longest inhabitants of the station continued to have mixed feelings about the new faces. At first, when the newest arrivals docked, there appeared to be a sense of hesitation amongst the locals. At first, many of the arrivals mistook this for xenophobia and acted poorly toward the inhabitants of the nearby systems. However, as time went by, it was clear to the fresh faced mid-rimmers and core world inhabitants that these people -farmers, nerf-herders and 'transportation specialists'- seemed to pity them. When that came to light the new arrivals' moods shifted back into friendly territory and business assumed its new, monstrous pace, dumping money into the station.

It was no secret that the Republic was anxious to claim a foothold into new territory out there in wild space. Just like it was no secret that this particular land grab had been attempted before. Sure, plenty of stories and rumors still persisted about the Janzoon I. It was still common knowledge around here for the oldest species still living in the region. Everyone knew about the previous blitz into wild space from their station but the most vocal had been hushed up by PR specialists quickly after the official announcement by the chancellor months ago. It hovered over their heads like dantooine mist, floating above the endless forests that covered the southern hemisphere. One hundred and thirty eight years. That's how long it had been.  Everyone knew it, they just didn't speak of it.

Regardless of the dreary faced locals, life was moving quickly and excitement filled the air! Adventure, change, discovery, the very life blood of the young and the spirited. Faces, both young and old, fresh and wise had filled Koda station until it seemed ready to burst at the seams. The sweet tonic of new opportunities had not graced this place in decades and these new men and women were eager to drink up as much as possible. They wouldn't have to wait long either. This was the final day; the final stretch of time before things got very interesting, very quickly.

For now, those that were about to take on a new frontier, it was either finish preparations...or drink.

Askrik stood his ground in the nearly empty medical facility. His dull green scales shined in the bright lights. He blinked repeatedly as the young human yelled at him, the lights in the medical bay revealing to his eyes that she had failed in cleaning the center properly. He shouldn't blame her but couldn't help himself. If she was incapable of seeing the filth revealed by ultraviolet light then she needed to invest in a cleaning droid that could.

Finally he could wait no longer to interrupt her, "Guage (Alien), I am going on a long journey and I don't know when I will get the opportunity to purchasse additional filterss. You are my lasst option. All of the other medical facilitiess have turned me away. Don't you people have ssome ssort of code that preventss you from not helping thosse in need?" Hoping to allow guilt to work on her while he answered his com, he turned away giving her a strong glare.

He grabbed his comlink in irritation and his nostrils flared as he breathed deep prior to answering the call, attempting to settle himself. He could smell the antiseptic the center used to clean their surfaces, its acrid scent barely remaining in the small space. "Horont (Yes) what do you want?" He thought about his response for a small moment, debating whether or not to apologize for his abruptness then remained silent waiting for whomever called to reply.

An irritated voice came over the com. "Turn your holo on you dirty lizard so I can see you properly." Askrik didn't recognize the voice at first but as soon as the holo popped up he knew the human calling him: The Dock Coordinator. "Your ship is leaking all over my hanger bay...again" the coordinator stared at Askrik waiting for him to reply.
"I told you sshe wass temperamental and to keep your blassted droidss away from her. Obvioussly thiss iss your fault." Askrik replied. "Sshe doessn't leak anything harmful itss probably just water. I will deal with thiss when I leave later today." He closed the channel abruptly and set his com to block the coordinators call with a smirk.

He turned back to the young woman and smiled, his sharp teeth clenched together. "Now then where were we...O yess. You were about to give me my filterss. I would hate for my death to be upon you when I breath in something that my lungs can't handle. I wass lucky to ssurvive thiss long with out them..."

Sandar continued walking never slowing a step for his padawan. The Chiss was taller than most humanoids but not a tower and many other species towered over him. His red eyes expertly traced a path though the crowd. Between his eyes dark blue skin and the recent wars many people backed away form the Chiss. However the lightsaber and obviously Jedi robes, not ornate yet complex in design, gave him away for a friend or at least an ally. The women tried to get to the datapad and keep up with Sandar in the crowd. "What if I told you I had a vision? That we should be here because this is where he is coming." Elyane frowned at him. She knew he hadn't had a vision, there wasn't a moment they where apart long enough for it and involuntary visions where very... obvious.

Sandar surprised a smile at the sight of Elyane frowning. He didn't want to irritate his padawan, and certinaly took no pleasure from it, but he didn't want to crush her emotions either. In his oppion to many Jedi lost that important conncetion to those around them, the conncetion of understanding an emotion becuase you felt it yourself. After all how could you serve the preservation of life, the goal of all Jedi, if you did not understand it, if you did not live.

Master, if you stop I can figure out where we are and get us to the docking port faster! Elyane said raising her voice. Sachdev spun on her, Watch your tone, you are getting too emotional. The sound came out sharper than he had meant it, he needed to heed that lesson himself. Taking a moment to calm himself he went on in a level voice, one more befitting a Jedi teacher. You know what my thoughts about emotions are. However while I want you to feel them you can not let them control you. It wasn't until that moment that Sachdev realized that their voices had gotten louder than he thought and a knot of people where looking at them.

Sachdev pulled Elyane along a little way until the people that had noticed them had dissipated in the crowd again. It took a moment for Sachdev to focus on the padawan standing in front of him hidden behind the hair the color of the rising sun on a face that should have been given to a queen instead of a solider. Elyane's beauty was innate, diminished only slightly by the plain dress of a padawan. However it would take a fool to think for all that Elyane was soft. One long look at her and those eyes set aside an foolish notion like that. Sachdev thought ruefully If looks could kill I would be dead long since.

This is a test for both you and Hando actually. As you know this mission is to be Hando's trail for knighthood so I am seeing how he handles not having a hand guiding him every step of the way. If he can't handle the station I'm not letting him on the mission and certainly not to become a knight. Sachdev waited a moment to make sure that Elyane had absorbed what he said. Then Sachdev countiuned,"Now for the part about you. You know where I am and you know that any Jedi here with the core would be in there chambers or in a loading bay prepping for a mission. So the only other force user is Hando and he is the only one near the edge of the station and by himself. Feel the Force and find him, no datapads, no maps, no asking directions. Sense him and follow, find him. Sachdev took the opportunity to check on Hando himself. He trusted his padawan to get the job done, eventually, but he wanted to know if Elyane began to slip. Sachdev felt the force, felt the people around him and on the entire station, and felt the name Hando, the intention of seeing him. The targeting of a farseeing was always hard to explain to someone else. It was a combination sensing them in the Force, seeing though a kind of wormhole to them, however a wormhole opened only in the mind, and needing to see them. You had have a need, to feel the need of seeing the target. It was not feeling this need, not needing it enough where most farseeing failed.

Elyane looked at him and waited silently until the faint glow around Sachdev faded. Elyane said, "I have found him Master, shall I lead the way? Sachdev  noded his assent. It was moments like this that gave him hope. She could fell but she could still behave like a Jedi. Sachdev followed Elyane to see eager to see how she did. In a promising sign her first steps where in the right direction.

Hando shook his mane out of his face, walked out in to the hallway of Section 2C and looked around. An information kiosk, they said. That was probably a good idea. While he most likely could find his way without visiting one, it would be time-consuming and, hence, unnecessary. Seeing no kiosk in his immediate vicinity, he shrugged, turned right and started walking down the hallway, eyes scanning the walls for a kiosk and the crowd for familiar faces.

He knew he had been given the assignment late, perhaps even last, since he'd heard talk of the mission for a long before Master Ordin had told him he would be going. He may be the last, at least of the jedi, to arrive. However, a big party such as the one going on this mission should be easy to find.

Navigating the crowd was no mean feat, at least if you didn't want to bump in to half a dozen individuals every other step, but Hando managed well. Certainly a lot better than the poor fella who'd just run head-first into a crowd of sturdy-looking bothans after having had the brilliant idea of snatching a stack of credits chips from a vendor stall nearby and making a run for it. The bothans growled and snarled at the would-be-thief as he lay sprawled on the floor, credits still clutched to his chest. Hando made a move to intervene, but before he could reach them, a squad of security guards, looking a lot more professional than Hando would have expected of this place, came running and Hando smiled. Clearly they didn't need jedi assistance in this matter. One of the guards stood back a bit, and Hando approached him.
"Excuse me, officer?" he said, politely, inclining his head in a small bow. The guard turned his neck to look at him, looked him up and down and then turned to face him fully.
"Master Jedi," he saluted. "What can I do for you?"
"The other Jedi joining the expedition, do you know where I can find them? If not, could you direct me to the closest information kiosk?"
"Can't you just... you know...?" the guard waved his hand in the air in front of Hando's face, and Hando suppressed the urge to smile and shake his head. He could use the force to find his fellow jedi, given the high concentration of them with both the Corps and other jedi being present, but thought conventional methods were better suited here.
"You are quite right, officer, I could." This time, he did crack a tiny smile. "But humour me, if you would?"

Elyane took them through the station, passing every kind of shop and service that Sachdev could think of. Keeping one eye on the padawan Sachdev looked around, he had been on the station a few days but never had a chance to see the station. It was obvious that the station was newly refurbished, small corners still had signs of years of neglect and the same rang true for the connections between the walls and ceiling. The colors where vibrant. Different species had different taste and with so many shops and boxes form all over the galaxy the conflicting ideas of appropriate shop hangings caused the promenade they where walking though to look something like a fair. Sachdev mused that for the previously near impoverished farmers and poor merchants that formed the backbone of the station a few months ago this was a fair. However despite the many colorful alien trappings the  stark green on white of the Republic Military dominated most things not owned by the shops. It wasn't to say that the Republic had invaded the station literally but it would only take one order and in a few minutes the sheer number of Republic resources here could easily rest control form any local authority.

Sachdev frowned behind Elyane. She had taken a turn that would move them away from where Sachdev saw Hando was. She was doing so well before this. Sachdev decided to give her a few minutes before stepping in, he wanted her to have every opportunity to succeed. Elyane stopped walking in the middle of an intersection. Form the way she was turning around it looked like even going back was a choice for her at the moment. Sachdev stood there and waited for the Padawan to make a decision, they needed to take the right passage and if Elyane got that wrong Sachdev would end the exercise. In the field you didn't have minutes or even seconds to pick a way to go. Your choice had to be instant and a wrong choice here would take her far away from Hando, Sachdev wanted her to succeed but he needed her to think like an officer on a field or a solider in a battle, not a padawan on a safe station. Elyane took a step towards the left. No. was the only word Sachdev spoke. Elyane stopped mid stride and stared at Sandar. When it became obvious that the Jedi Diviner was not going to follow her Elyane took a stance and waited for her master to speak. When Sachdev saw that Elyane was ready to receive instruction he spoke. "You have been off the path for a few minutes now. This was your last chance to get it right and you went in the opposite direction. I want you to succeed but  in the field you don't have minutes to chose and a wrong chose almost always means you lose your target. Elyane simply said Yes Master. Her voice sounded strained. It was not the first time Elyane failed the exercise and Sachdev gave the same lecture after each failure. Although she had begun to succeed more than fail. Sachdev continued his lecture "Now if you are tracking someone and lose them where do you go to find them?. Elyane replied quickly and excitedly this was her favorite part of investigative work Go to the nearest bar, tavern, or pub. If non are around then the nearest restaurant.. Sachdev smiled That is correct. So if I told you that he was in Docking Facility 2, Level 1, Section 2C; and knowing that there are no information kiosk there and that the nearest is in a large food court near that section can you get us where we need to go? Elyane nodded looked around until she found a sign and took her first step in the right direction.

In a few minutes they arrived at the food court. There was a rather obvious information kiosk hub near an entrance to the area where Hando had boarded and a Bar with a long open window clear form its bar which gave a good view of both the people arriving and at the kiosk. Sachdev lead Elyane to the bar and had Elyane chose the seats. It was a simple exercise of choosing a surveillance location one which Elyane had long sense mastered. Near an exist with a view of an entrance, any large windows if you wanted to observe outside the establishment and plenty of space around your seat in case you need to stand up quickly, or fight.

Sachdev ordered a drink, Elyane did also, and the pair master and apprentice could have passed for two friends, or a couple, simply having a drink, the only thing breaking that image was their Jedi robes. They waited for a few minutes for Hando to appear, he had obviously found his way quickly. However Sachdev wasn't prepared for what had come on him. He didn't think this padawan would be nearly important enough to have visions but he did, and strong ones at that. The visions came on Sachdev strongly whirling though his head.

Hando half leaned half sat on a large rock. The cathar was wearing his robes but the robes of a master, not an apprentice. In his arm was a shepherds crook. But then the image flashed to another Hando was the same except now the crook was replaced by a spear. The two began to alternate as if the Force was not sure which would be the true final form of Hando, or that it would not tell him. The two visions faded replaced by a third.
The cathar in this vision was certainly Hando but old with gray whispers running though his fur. However it was not the gray which told of Handos age but the sheer immensity of wisdom, power, and confidence which this man radiated so strongly it could be felt. The Jedi stood his eyes closed a look of complete serenity on his face, a look which could calm even a storm. The robes, still those of a master, where ornately worked with many fine patterns and stitching which must have taken months to complete, the entire robe in a pattern of black and white so that the two colors, despite the odd shapes they formed, where perfectly balanced. The long sleeves of the robe rand down to revel his hands each held out and turned up to hold a holocron. The one in the right hand glowed blue the color bringing light to the black background of the vision, the other red seeming despite its own glow to darken even the black surrounding it.

As quickly as they came the visions went, the entire thing taking only a second, despite the fact to Sachdev it felt like years. Elyane saw the grimace on Sachdev face and could tell what had happened. These involuntary visions always came with a amount of pain and the stronger the vision the more pain. For Sachdev to be grimacing as he was Elyane knew that the pain must be near unbearable. Master are you alright? do you need me to take you to your chambers? Elyane knew the pain always went after moments although headaches could last for hours after. The wave of disorientation subsided land Sachdev regained his repose. Gently brushing Elyane's hand off him he responded, No padawan. I am fine now. Also we have found our wayward companion. Getting up form the Bar Sachdev and Elyane walked though the large milling mass of people and things to Hando.

Padawan Hando. Hello I am Jedi Diviner Sandar. I trust your flight was pleasant?

"Alright..." the guard said, a look of amusement and confusion on his face. "Well, the jedi may not be swarming the place as much as the Republic Navy, but there are a number of them, milling about the place like everyone else. Can't say anything more specific than that, sorry." Hando was about to reply when the guard suddenly snapped his fingers. "Wait, yeah, they do seem to spend a lot of time at the aerobics facility. Can't blame them: fancy as all hell, that place is." He quieted once again and Hando smiled at him, he liked this guard. He had a air of carelessness about him, which was quite refreshing in a military man.

"Thank you, officer." He said, nodding slightly. "I'll check it out. And the nearest information Kiosk?"

"Right, that too." the Guard looked around, seemingly trying to identify exactly where he was. Hando had assumed this was a long-time guard of the station, but surely he wouldn't have to look around if that were so. Then again, he mused, this station has undergone a lot of changes lately, perhaps even the oldest residents would have trouble finding their way. "Ah." the guard spat finally, obviously a little frustrated. "Go to the food court, the have a whole lot of them there. It's down this way..." he held out his whole arm, pointing down the corridor in the direction Hando had been going. "second corridor on your left, then follow the signs."

"Many thanks." Hando said, once again inclining his head. "I'll let you get back to your duty."

The guard nodded at him as he turned around and headed down the corridor, following the directions he'd been given. It didn't take him long to find the first sign to the food court: it was a bright, blinking, green sign with the word "Food Court" flashing in Basic, Hutteese and, Hando assumed, a few other languages which he did not know. Another few minutes of navigating the crowd and he found himself in a well-light, heavily populated, bustling food court. The smell of a hundred different dishes assaulted his nose and he took a deep breath. There was something... special about food courts such as this one: all sorts of species, all sorts of people, crammed in: eating, drinking. sharing. During his travels, he'd spent more than a few hours in cantinas such as this one. He wasn't sure it was a completely pleasant experience, but each was, if nothing else, unique.

He located the information kiosks and started towards them, dodging a Rishii server swooshing past him, a special-made tray clutched in her grip. He hadn't gone for than a few meters, though, before he both sensed and saw two jedi coming towards him. He recognised the older one immediately: Diviner Sandar was a known figure among the padawans of the Jedi Order, and his striking appearance made him easily recognised. The other, a shorter, younger female, must be his padawan, Hando decided. There was something familiar about her, but Hando wrote that off to seeing her during their time as younglings.
"Master Sandar." He said, and gave deep bow. "It was, surprisingly so. Thank you." He turned to the female, by Sandar's side, and bowed again, though not quite as deeply. "I am sure that we have met before, miss, but allow me to formally introduce myself: Hando Rho, padawan to Master Ordin."

Sachdev returned the bow with a nod, not deep nor shallow. Elyane returned the bow. It is a pleasure to meet you Hando. Sachdev waited for Hando to turn back to him. Even if the journey was a good one you must be famished. There is a good restaurant which makes a passable Chiss delicacy called shoufa as well as more traditional meals. Sachdev motioned for his padawan and Hando to follow.

As they walked Sachdev continued to talk, the expedition doesn't leave until tomorrow yet, so we have arranged rooms for you in the Jedi's hall as it is being called. Although space is rare now so you are bunking with another padawan. At Hando's confused looked Sachdev expanded his explanation. When so many Jedi came to the station as part of the Corps or because they are going on mission, they wanted a quiet place for mediation so the Corps rented out a long hall and boarded all the Jedi there. The hall also has some large chambers which can be used for meditation. With the entire area being for only Jedi use the other expedition members began to refer to it as the Jedi temple. However so of the Masters didn't like the implication and got the description lessened to hall. The look left Hando's eyes and Sachdev saw he understood.

They arrived at the restaurant, the hostess recognizing a party of Jedi seated them right away. The resultant smelled of the thousands of spices in the kitchen. The lighting was a low intensity blue coming form lights in the ceilings as well as the wall where people sat. The place was decorated like a family joint, proved by the picture of someone, probably the proprietor's mother near the door. The place was packed for this time of day but that may have been because of the sheer number of people on the station. The group was seated at a table which began to emit the same blue light as they sat around it. The hostess kindly waited for them to get comfortable before taking the orders. Sachdev ordered the shoufa and Elyane a salad and soup. Hando ordered something but Sachdev didn't hear distracted by the visions still fresh in his mind. Sachdev gave Hando a considering look. This boy seemed so young and innocent yet he had the potential for a truly remarkable, or dangerous, future. Putting aside these thoughts Sachdev returned to the present with the task at hand. The three talked about nothing really until the food came, and at that Sachdev waited awhile for everyone to eat a little. The Shoufa was hot and the noodles where well made, Madine must be in the kitchen now. He had had the shoufa the first day and it was the best he had had outside of a Chiss home and asked to meet the cook, who was Madine. However with thoughts of past meals and current cooks Sachdev was getting distracted again. With everyone into their meal Sachdev spoke.

So this is to be your trial for knighthood yes? Sachdev already knew the answer but waited for a response anyways. Well as such you are to prove that you can operate independently of support, as a Knight must often do. You must also display you understand and possess Jedi virtues and values. again Sachdev waited for a response although all this was by now old information to Hando. " So to those ends I will not be watching you over the shoulder constantly nor am I your master or supervisor. I am with the mission to complete my own goals and of course to continue training Elyane. Frankly unless you ask for help, and I will only help to the extent of making your trail possible not easier, or unless you begin to display qualities which show you unready to be a knight, I will not interact with you. As a trail you should be isolated as possible. Sachdev knew that Hando had had a scaring experience with the dark side and that this mission was to conquer his fear of it as much as become a knight. The line of "qualities which show you unready to be a knight" was a kind way of saying falling to the dark side and form Hando's stone faced expression he understood. Think of this as meal as your orientation to the knighthood trails after which you begin the test. This is your last opportunity to ask questions before like I said, we speak rarely. So if you have any questions speak them now once we leave this restaurant you are on your own.

The young woman ran her fingers through her hair, glancing uncomfortably around for a supervisor -ANY supervisor. There wasn't a single one in sight, and none of the other nurses would make eye contact with her. She would destroy their caffeine supplies for this. All of it. The second this lizard tried flashing his canines she felt color rush into her face and the slow, boiling frustration that had been lurking under the surface since she'd started her third overtime shift this morning boil over.

"No." She crossed her arms and leaned in, eyes narrowing dangerously. "I've had enough of this. You don't get to just barge in here and beg for medical supplies like some stray animal. I'll give you one -ONE- and then you will leave!"

The waiting room they occupied had rapidly quieted around them. One of the other Twi-lek nurses also took notice. She scurried over, trying to avoid looking the much taller looking bounty hunter in the eye. "Is, uh, everything okay here?"

"Yes!" The first human snarled. "Get this...individual...one of the B1-7 filters. The sooner he gets one, the sooner he leaves."

"You got it." The twi'lek turned and rapidly moved to get into the supply room in the back of the clinic, but not before giving Askrik and obviously displeased once over. She returned in moments with a small canister, which was then shoved unceremoniously into his claws. "There you are sir."
I like my heroes human, flawed and beatable. And failing every so often.
Bingo. Z33B, you really know where your towel is.

Jerran grunted, shifting the panel slightly. "Come on... come on... you kriffing... piece... of....".

Clang. "Kriff it." Jerran winced, nursing his cut knuckles. "Kark. I know this fit three hours ago...." He studied the panel carefully - perhaps it'd become warped? Rubbing the scruffy hair that covered the lower part of his lean, chiseled face, Jerran eyed the panel critically. Nope, no warpage. Jerran sighed.

"Okay, let's try it... this way...." He shifted the panel around, then tried again. This time the metal plate locked into place with a satisfying clank. Jerran quickly tightened the rivets that held the panel in place, then crawled backwards out of the end of the c0ckpit. The crawlspace was narrow, confining, and dark - but Jerran felt a certain security in working deep in the heart of the massive war machine he piloted. In that cramped space there was little room for anything but mechanically problems, tools, and himself. Jerran liked that. His world became, just for a few hours, that tiny cave of electronic relays, coolant hoses, fusion links, and rotor units. It was easy to understand - every problem had a clear solution that required only a little technical know-how and elbow grease.

Most of life's problems were far more complicated.

Pulling himself over the back seat, where the system operator usually sat backwards, he dropped into the next seat - the gunner's. The c0ckpit of the AT-AD was very narrow, with the three crew seats stacked close in a row, just like a fighter's c0ckpit. To get to the access panel at the back of the walker, one had to climb over the pilot and gunner's stations.

Jerran put his feet up on the headrest of the pilot's seat. He looked down at his greasy coveralls, sniffed, and wrinkled his brow. "Kriff - I hope there's a shower nearby." He'd been working on the walker for the better part of a day now, as was easy to see from his disheveled appearance.
Rummaging in his chest pocket, Jerran pulled out a gleaming electronic cigarette and touched the button that lit it. Placing it between his lips, he inhaled gratefully, then blew out a cloud of smoke with a sigh. Finally, repairs done. He took another drag at the cig', then reached over and flipped open the cover to a small cargo space. Jerran reached in and pulled out a change of cloths, a small bottle, and a large, well made combat knife in a sheath. He bundled it all together, then climbed out of the c0ckpit and over the side of the walker, sliding down one of the machine's massive legs. Striding across the grimy floor of the bay, cigarette tip glowing as it wreathed white smoke, he headed for the refreshers. Time to get cleaned up.

At the mention of getting food, Hando's stomach gave an unbid rumble, he was indeed starving. In his excitement over the journey, he'd forgotten how long it had been since last he ate. He nodded to Master Sandar. "Food would be highly welcome, master. Thank you." Walking on Sandar's left, with the padawan Elyane on the other side of the Diviner, the three of them made their way to the restaurant.

Once seated, Hando quickly perused the menu and noticed an unsurprising lack of Cathar cuisine: cathar could do well with the same food as humans, for example, but with their ferocious nature came an appetite for meat, often the more bloody kind. Hando considered ordering off the menu, simply asking for chunks of meat, lightly seared, but thought better of it after a quick glance around the restaurant: realizing he was one of few felinoids. "The shoufa, whatever it is, sounds great. I'll have that as well." He said to the server as she took their order. His many travels had not provided him with the opportunity to try the Chiss dish before, and eager as he was for new experiences, he figured now was as good as any time. The server left the table and the conversation then turned to idle topics: how long had the others been at the station, had Hando's journey had any troubles, where did Elyane come from, that sort of thing.

About halfway through the meal, Master Sandar spoke up about Hando's trials to knighthood and Hando simply nodded at his question: Clearly Master Sandar already knew, and it wasn't Hando's place to interrupt. What Master Sandar then said, did surprise and, to some little extent, frustrate him: Master Ordin had given Hando a thorough account of what would be expected of him during this mission and he'd spent a lot of time reading up on old accounts of the Jedi Trials. Furthermore, Master Sandar wasn't the only Jedi Master going on this mission and if Hando were to receive the same speech from every single one of them, his patience may run short quickly. He was about to say as much, but stopped and reconsidered. Clearly, all masters wouldn't be giving him this speech: that was highly unlikely. Further, while it did seem as him meeting the Diviner within five minutes of his arrival was a coincidence, it may very well not have been. He thought for a moment on how best to respond to this. He put down his cutlery, took a sip from his drink and then looked up to face the Diviner.
"With all due respect, Master Sandar..." He said, trying to sound as respectful as possible. "Master Ordin has briefed me fully on what my trials will and will not be, and I have taken great measures to prepare myself for this task." He forced his voice to be steady and had to fight the urge to add a growl, as was the Cathar way of emphasising one's words, but was considered threatening when done in Basic. "Further, I must say that I do not appreciate being lectured like this, utterly unbidden. You approached me in the food court, I have not asked or solicited your advice, nor come to you for help. This lecture seems to be sprung from something other than me expressing a need for help." He swallowed, took another sip of drink, and added. "Again, with all due respect, would you be willing to tell me what that might be?"

Sachdev smiled on the inside. He had never meet Hando before and had only heard a little. Sachdev had been rough on Hando on purpose and the results where pleasing. When he saw him and form what he had said so far the boy seemed to be another wide eyed padawan. This Cathar padawan did have a fire in him. Sachdev even thought he heard a suppressed growl. The way he responded, this explained the visions of future greatness. If he could be guided in just the right way he could truly become a powerful Jedi. However those visions which implied he still might fall continued to float in Sachdev's head. He would need to watch this one, he could become a great ally; or a bitter foe.

Well it might not be entirely in my rights, but I was testing you. Congratulations, you passed. I'm sorry but I have never meet you and have only heard a little. I needed to know what you were like. If we are going on a dangerous missions together I needed to know that. Sachdev replied in a level voice, letting his now softer expression do some of the talking as well. Although he was not aware of it his Blue features where even the more enhanced in the light emitted by the table. The color of the blue playing with his eyes giving them a slightly purple quality. It wasn't until then that Sachdev noticed Elyane glancing worriedly between the two of them. She evidently thought things where getting worse and tried to place her hand back on the table from her lightsaber, unnoticed. All ways the fighter that one. Oh well I am working on that. Sachdev mused to himself. Speaking out loud now Sachdev continued, And although you might not have asked for my help I was sent to give it. Your quarters are located here. Sachdev slid a small datatpad to Hando with a map of the station and a light blinking in a room. It’s at the end of the Jedi Hall in Level 2, section 4A. The Hall by the way runs from there to section 5F Sachdev hoped that the realization he was sent to give Hando his room assignment took a little of the air out of Hando. Maintaining a proper balance of self-confidence and respect was important if Hando was going to remain good and Sachdev felt the Cathar to be slightly out of balance. Sachdev also meant this humbling moment would replace a verbal reprimand for his behavior. When he had stopped to let Hando speak he was sure that was what he would ask, not that his actual response was any less pleasing. Sachdev forced that information because he was genuinely worried the young Cathar might walk away. Basically most of what I said earlier wasn't true. I don't intend to do your trail for you but if need help or someone to talk to you have my frequency. Remember I can understand you better than you think. But that kind of talk isn't for a restaurant.

Sachdev finished his Shoufa the last noodles slipping silently into his mouth. One last piece of advice, Jedi say they don't play the Great Game, but they do. Granted, not to the extent that Chiss or Bothan's have taken it to but the Game non-the-less. Also it never hurts when dealing with a politician.

Hando smiled a little at Sandar's words. The test had been a good one, he mused, taken him completely unaware. He nodded slightly, as to himself. He was of course glad he had passed Sandar's test, but since he'd only done what he considered to be the righ thing, he couldn't reeally feel too proud of it: it was no a achievement, at least not in a traditional sense. He took another bite to eat, finishing the meal, and washed it down with the last of his drink before he accepted the datapad from the Diviner. "Thank you, Master." He said, solemnly, and bowed his head. He thought for a moment, then added. "And I apologize if  I came across as rude before."

He looked over the datapad and saw that they were not that far from the Jedi Hall, convenient. As the Diviner spoke again, Hando raised his head to meet his gaze. "I thank you in advance, Master." He said, putting a bit of extra emphasis on the gratitude in his voice. "I do hope help will not be required, but it's reassuring to know that it may be found."

The Great Game was something had not given to much concern during his studies: all jedi were of coure required to know their way around diplomacy and navigating the potential minefield that talking to senators and dignitaries was, but actually playing the great Game was not something he'd dabbled in. "I'll make sure to remember that, Master, thank you." He said, though not quite as solemn and grateful as before.

They paid for their meal with little fuss and got up, Hando standing aside to let Sandar and his padawan step out first and then followed.  The navigated the crowd which was still thick, but dwindling a little as they day was turning into night. As they came to the crossroads, where one led towards the Jedi Hall and the other away from it, Hando looked up at the Diviner and his padawan. "I'll head to the Jedi Hall, get settled in for the one night I'll be spending there." He said, with the hint of a smile on his face. "Will you join me or do you have another engagement?"

Once in the refresher station, Jerran headed for the public showers. Dropping a few credits into the slot, he stepped into the cleansing chamber and an opaque privacy force-field shimmered to life over the doorway. Tossing aside his dirty cloths, he flipped on the water sprayers and relaxed as the hot water drums against his sore muscles. Outside, in the central shower area, he could hear a few people talking. He ignored them as he cleaned up, but snatches of their conversation got through to him.

"- right? I mean, it's a big deal. I had to go through a lot of clearance just for basic engineering duties."

"That's 'cause you're a civvy, Bered. If you'd joined the armed forces you'd have been cleared a lot quicker." This voice was deeper.

"Yeah, no thanks. All that shouting, orders, chest thumping - not my thing."

"Hey, show some respect. The Republic's troops are the only thing standing between half the galaxy and slavery. Those Sith -"

Jerran blocked out the conversation. That'd been him at eighteen - eager to fight for the Republic, destroy the Sith, and bring peace to the galaxy. Jerran smiled, a twisted grimace. So much had happened between now and then. Thinking back on those time was like reliving someone else's memories.

Glancing at the digital chrono set in the metal wall of the shower, Jerran saw he had a few seconds left. He rinses himself quickly, then stood while the water jets switched to air. A half minute later and he was dry. He slid into his fresh clothing, buckled on his combat knife, and stepped out of the shower.

The two men were still there, one washing up after a job, the other leaning against the wall. The one leaning was obviously millitary, the one washing a civilian engineer. They were still talking about the Republic's troops and their sacrifices. Jerran tried to ignore them, popping open the bottle and swishing out his mouth with the dental cleaner. He spat into the sink, then turned suddenly to the two men.

"You think the war was really worth it?" His tone was pitying, not scornful. "I take it you haven't seen much action."

Before either of them could answer, he strode out of the room. He caught the remark that the solider whispered to the engineer. "Who was that? Must be some kind of mercenary barve. Huh, kriffing ingrate."

No matter where he went, the karking war followed, like some gleeful monster stalking him through the dark. Jerran headed for the turbolifts. He needed a drink.

"It is no issue. However watch yourself in the future. Other Knights and Master's may not be so forgiving." Sachdev said at Hando's apologize.

Sachdev thought, I probably just got this guy killed. at Hando's response to his Trieste on the Great Game. Form what he said he didn't really understand the severity of taking the Great Game lightly. Sachdev made a mental note to expand on the importance of taking the game later seriously. Even if you never played you need to respect the Game.

No we are not returning to the hall yet. Elyane has a few epics to recite while navigating an obstacle course. Sachdev replied. He glanced at Elyane out of the corner of his eye. She wore a glower look, reciting the epics was not an easy task. Sachdev reached a hand out, towards Hando in a hand shake. Sometimes at a physical touch Sachdev could see the past of someone. However spine time nothing happened. Hando looked confused at the handshake. Sachdev quickly hid his motives with a simple lie "To the day we are equals. Have a good night and the Force be with you."

They parted ways there and Sachdev turned away from the Padawan and the Halls with Elyane in tow. They were walking down a hall with a gentle curve following the outside of the station, not covered in shops like the promenade; and outside of getting form one place to another it didn't serve a purpose. However even with that fact it was still filled, the station wasn't designed to hold so many people at once. Sachdev noted the dimmer lighting and looked at his watch. It was later then he thought and the thinner crowd of people proved it. Sachdev mused at the silliness of changing the lighting on a space station, where day night cycles where completely artificial and every room could be made pitch black at high noon or vice versa. However Sachdev realized when he stifled a yawn that he was grateful for the dimmer lighting, maybe not so foolish after all.

They walked away in silence Sachdev was waiting for Elyane to speak, he knew she wanted to, but she was not the kind to speak in public. Sachdev and Elyane went to the Gym on sublevel 2. It was a good facility and at this time always empty. When they arrived and Elyane saw they were alone she spoke immediately. What the he-l was that Master? First you treat him like a three year old youngling who just tried to cut off his friends head with his lightsaber, and then you go the other way completely with your 'looking forward to the day we are equals' line. You where throwing that kid around like a Rag doll and that’s wrong and you know it! Sachdev smiled, he made sure it was a dangers smile. Ragdoll eh? You go tell that to that padawan and I think you will find your ragdoll has a spine, teeth, and a lightsaber. Elyane visible deflated slightly at that, anyone with any sense knew not to anger a Cathar, especially one who could use the Force. Also who do you think you are? I know you’re the "Diviner's Padawan" but don't forget who the Diviner is! I let you speak your mind now and then, and you know why; but behavior like this will get that privilege revoked. Elyane looked back with eyes that could burn ice and freeze fire. Diviner's Padawan. Why am I the diviner's padawan? I should have trained under someone who fought in the War, not an academic who has never seen any real combat. Elyane was trying again. She knew his answer and Sachdev gave it. Because a little birdie told me to take you as my apprentice. She knew that was his way of saying a vision and had figured out he had a vision of her future and for some reason he needed to train her. That wasn't a large leap in logic, and it was accurate but the specifics would never occur to her. Sachdev spoke, you heard me tell Hando you had some epics to recite while running? Well get to it. I will be meditating up there, please see no one bothers me. Elyane huffed and striped off her outer Jedi robes revealing a breathing athletic shirt. She turned to the start of the track already muttering the start of Tales of the Sky wardens

Sachdev walked to the second story of the gym, from here he could see Elyane running and the large view gave him a sense of comfort. The gym was well lit despite the time. The bright LED lights shining on all the new equipment, provided by the refurbished station. There where machines for every kind of work out from pools, to desert rock wall climbing; however its location so near the Jedi Hall meant mostly only Jedi came here and at this time they would be retiring or going to meditate themselves. Sachdev pushed Hando form his mind, he would need to give Hando thought, but not now. Now it was his padawan who need his attention. Sachdev repeated the Jedi code as he closed his eyes to being the meditation.
How do you tell someone that in a very possible future you will marry and have a child? That you took her because you need to protect her, protect that future. I don't love you Elyane, but I can't see harm come to you either. the thought floated across the void of his meditation. He would not recognize any thought, only the force. Maybe that is what love is. that was not his thought. Sachdev opened his eyes already knowing what he would see, and the gym was gone. The room he was now in was not really a room, not even a place, but he was there and he knew it for what it was. For not being a place it was filled with images. Starts, maps both artistic and precise, flows of time and explosions of color, and that most sweet feeling of life. That was what the light side fleet like, pure life flowing though you, making normal life seem dual by comparison and right now Sachdev had never felt more alive. If anywhere Sachdev was in the pure light side of the Force. But it wasn't the place which was not a place that caught Sachdev's attention it was the spirit of Master Corianin Nedeal. I can't love. It wasn't built in me. My people and my training have stripped that form me. Love is dangerous. The other master wore a sad smile, it was difficult to tell her exact expression for the transparent glow Force spirits of the light side always had, although in this place she seemed more solid than he. That was the problem with my era of Jedi to. They could never see the advantage of emotion for fear of the dark side. Not that it is an easy path, although one I think you are trying to walk, and guide Elyane down. I am simply making sure she doesn't give up her humanity to gain her robes. Because how can you preserve life if you do not live it? Yet you do not love? Is that really living? Why did you bring me here? It couldn't have been to talk of Elyane that was a stray thought you picked up on as I arrived. You avoided my point. Is it because you know I was right? However you are right I did not bring you here for that discussion that is for another day. Sachdev grimaced slightly at Nedeal, she could maneuver a conversation as well as he if not better. Not only had she trapped him in a corner but had stopped him form responding as well. Sachdev mused there was more than just Divining he could learn from the Master. Nedeal continued speaking form her advantage, We are going to go over past sight now, your foresight is sufficient for the moment and with the mission you will need a stronger past sight. Also this will help you not miss like you did with Hando. Sachdev maintained his grimace, so Nedeal caught he had slipped, sometimes he wondered how often the women watched him. For a six hundred year dead women, she was as busy as the rest of them.

The training went on for what felt like hours. Maybe it had, in this place time flowed differently. Nedeal finished what she meant to teach and Sachdev thanked her for it. Over the time he had thawed out, he really did enjoy Nedeal's company, she was one of the few Jedi who understood him, the seers where to lost in their own world and no other Jedi even had ability like his. In a moment of silence Sachdev asked Have you ever changed your future, changed a vision? I have seen my own end and no matter what I do I can't change what I see. Nedeal looked back in silence her face unreadable. Sachdev had asked before and Nedeal always responded the same, no. Nedeal opened her mouth her mouth to give her response again, and her own words shocked her. Once. Sachdev froze, he was not expecting that and form Nedeal's face neither was she. Despite his usually striking blue appearance in her pale glow and with his dumbfounded expression he looked almost funny. Recovering his voice and mind Sachdev asked fervently What changed? How did you change it? Nedeal hesitated, she had not meant to tell him this yet, but it was already out and she reasoned Sachdev to be old enough now. I saw a vision of destruction on the Galactic scale. The end of all life. What did you do to change it?Something forbidden, I set wheels in motion to stop it.And after this the vision changed? No, it was a new vision entirely. What did you see?Hope, a hope for the galaxy against this threat. Something that could save everyone. By this time Sachdev was asking in a frantic voice, his eyes wild with excitement. Sachdev was hoping against hope that their might be a way to change his destiny, to alter those terrible visions. Nedeal however was as calm as the eye of the storm, and wore an expression like death, in stark contrast to the beautiful star system forming a temporary halo as it slide by. Yes, but what was it!?! Nedeal responded with a voice heavy with sorrow and regret, You.

Sachdev barely felt the punch of leaving the Vision so abruptly. What normally felt like hitting an asteroid at light speed was dulled completely by the shock of Nedeal's last word. Her voice echoed in his mind. You.You.You.You.You. He barely felt Elyane touching him.
