Dark or Light? Why choose when neither is right?

Spoiler: So where are we now?
(hover to show)
Fak, when it comes to spending FP to enhance a roll you generally do it after the roll although it is supposedly before the "result of the roll" is known. Now how to adjudicate this when it comes to attack rolls where you what you roll and what you need(ed) to hit may be a grey area but I'd generally permit it when it'd keep things interesting. I'm pretty sure Osten/Sienn would see the attack that barely didn't hit, even before rolling everything else, and figure it was an important enough shot to throw the FP behind it; even turning it into a hit is no promise to take out the Firebreather as we'd still need to see how damage goes. Looking back a round or two the "almost can't miss" shot that RA-JR missed would have been the opportune time to spend a FP to help the attack; not that PCs shouldn't suffer some setbacks that one is the biggest reason the Firebreather is still in the field!
I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone who requires the use of FP to be declared before a roll is even made. Doing so makes them useless far too often (not possibly enough to help or complete overkill) which basically means they don't get spent unless needed as a cost or if you have to roll something where higher is clearly better as there is no threshold that better doesn't do any more. It's kind of the same boat you get when you have "reroll take 2nd" abilities which in practice are almost the same as "reroll take better" in that you usually don't reroll if the initial roll is a success even if it just barely because a higher number may not do any good. Maybe going on too long but the takeaway is supposed to be that if a player/character has something that can improve a roll they probably should at least be aware of when that will do some good.
Getting things figured out is important her as Furbal contemplates needing to finish off the Firebreather or if his attack is better directed as a SER with SER-C being of particular interest because it seems to have a hitch in its step (moved down the CT) even before Krusseck started climbing up it. Also trying to wrap my head around what the best Tactics are for Tyro (know-tactics currently at +19!) as things don't look so good and getting charged and/or trampled by a SER would be VERY unpleasant. How Krusseck is still going speaks volumes to his durability.
